Ronald Going

Mr. Ronald Going of Plum Hill, IL departed this life in the Friendship Manor Health Care Center in Nashville, IL on Sunday, January 7, 2024, at 11:35 P.M. He had attained the age of 77 years, 4 months, and 19 days.

Ronald was born in Belleville, IL on August 19, 1946, the son of Erwin and Regina (nee Bordewisch) Going. He was united in marriage to Mary Palek in the Reformed Presbyterian Church in Oakdale, IL on June 13, 1970, and she preceded him in death on January 18, 2018.

Mr. Going was a 1964 graduate of Okawville High School. He served in the United States Army and saw action in Vietnam, including action in the Tet Offensive. At the time of his discharge, he had attained the rank of Sergeant. Ron worked as a telephone lineman, retiring from Verizon in 2010. He was a faithful member of St. John’s United Church of Christ in Plum Hill where he taught Sunday School for 45 years. He also served on the church council and formerly served as President of the congregation. Ron was a dedicated 4-H leader for 52 years and was inducted into the 4-H Hall of Fame in 2012. He enjoyed working in his garden and was an accomplished woodworker. Most of all, he especially loved spending time with his children and granddaughters.

Left to mourn his passing is two sons, Benjamin Going and wife Kimberly of Plum Hill and Timothy Going of Texarkana, TX; three granddaughters, Kylie, Jaelyn, and Sophia Going all of Plum Hill; a sister, Katherine Rogers of Godfrey, IL; two sisters-in-law, JoAnn Going of Addieville, IL, and Sharon Going of Plum Hill, two nephews, Bradley Going of Plum Hill, and John Rogers and wife Whitney and their daughter Addison of Godfrey; a niece, Janel Shelby and husband Brian and their daughter Zatanna of Murray, KY; other relatives and a host of friends.

In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Lloyd Going and Robert Going; a nephew, Matthew Going; a brother-in-law, John Rogers; and his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Charles and Hazel (nee Patton) Palek.

Funeral services will be held from the St. John United Church of Christ in Plum Hill on Friday, January 12, 2024, at 11 A.M. with Pastor Don Jones officiating. Interment will be in the church cemetery. Military graveside rites will be accorded by American Legion Post 233 of Okawville.

Friends may call at the St. John United Church of Christ in Plum Hill on Thursday from 5 P.M. until 8 P.M. and again on Friday from 9 A.M. until the service hour.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the St. John Building Fund or the Washington County Extension Education Foundation and will be accepted by the Campagna Funeral Home.
