The Nashville News proudly introduces its new sports editor, Brent Huelsmann.

Huelsmann, who lives in Aviston and is a life-long Clinton County resident is very familiar with Nashville and Hornets sports, though as a 2009 graduate of Breese Central Community High School, his past experiences have been from the opposing team’s stands.

At Central, Huelsmann ran track in his freshman year and was on the scholarbowl team for three years – during his senior year, they were conference champions.

Following that, Huelsmann attended SIU–Edwardsville where he graduated in May of 2014 with a bachelor’s degree in Mass Communications with a minor in History.

Huelsmann was employed at 88.8 FM WSIE during his time at Edwardsville, where he covered the Cardinals, the Blues and hosted the Clubhouse Sports show.

Despite numerous hours working for WSIE in the pressbox and locker rooms of Busch Stadium, Huelsmann is a proud Cubs fan, and says that he wore his Cubs hat into the Cards locker room, something he doesn’t recommend others try. Huelsmann is also a fan of the Minnesota Vikings.

Huelsmann has also worked as a grocery store manager at Schuette’s Market in Breese, and worked as an intern at the Troy, Maryville, St. Jacob, Marine Chamber of Commerce.

“We are lucky to have Brent here,” said Managing Editor Alex Haglund. “During his short time with the Nashville News, he is already showing his capabilities as an all-around journalist, his work ethic, his dedication, and most importantly, the fact that he is, in general, crazy about sports.”

“I look forward to working with the coaches and athletes in Nashville,” said Huelsmann, “and I am happy to be the voice of Hornet Sports in the Nashville News.”

Huelsmann repalces Travis Volz as Sports Editor. Volz is now the Nashville News’ Advertising Director. Huelsmann can be reached at, or by phone at 327-3411.

Brent Huelsmann is The Nashville News’ new sports editor and will be covering Hornets athletics.
