NCHS Board Already Looking At 2015-2016 School Year

By Alex Haglund

The Nashville Community High School Board met for their regular meeting on Monday, May 18. With this being the last regular meeting of the school year, the board was already looking ahead and set graduation for the class of 2016 for Sunday, May 22, at 2 p.m., the week before Memorial Day.

The board had discussed having graduation on Memorial Day but with the holiday occurring later in 2016 than this year, that would leave too much time between the end of classes (May 20, if all five snow days are used) and graduation (Memorial Day is May 30 in 2016).

Other dates pertaining to the upcoming school year were also set.

Registration will be held on Monday, August 3, from 7:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., and on Tuesday, August 4, from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Freshman orientation will be held on Thursday, August 6, beginning at 7 p.m.

Chromebook orientation, a required event for parents of students receiving Google Chromebook laptops, will be held again this year. Dates for the orientation are July 16 from 6 to 7 p.m. and August 6 from 6 to 7 p.m.

Student Handbook

NCHS Principal Brian Pasero outlined numerous changes to the NCHS Student Handbook to the School Board.

“While it looks like we have a whole lot that we are changing,” Pasero said, “it’s more of an update.”

Pasero stated that the most noticeable changes were in the disciplinary section, particularly pertaining to bullying and cyberbullying.

NCHS already had language in the handbook regarding many of these issues, but now updates are required (mainly in the wording) to follow guidelines set forth by the State of Illinois.

The Board is just reviewing the handbook changes currently. The issue won’t be voted on until the June meeting.
