Hoyleton American Legion Post Commander Norma Slone (left) welcomes Aaron Czajkowski of Ashley, a 2014 delegate to American Legion Boys State at Eastern Illinois University, Charleston. Aaron attended a Hoyleton American Legion Post 887 monthly meeting recently to thank Post 887 members for sponsoring his Boys State week, and share details of his experience.

American Legion Boys State and Girls State are week-long leadership experiences available to high school juniors. Washington County Legion and Legion Auxiliary Posts sponsor several youth delegates each year. High school guidance counselors and American Legion post officers cooperate to identify and encourage qualified candidates to attend as part of a continuing Legion youth program.

Washington County high school juniors can get more information on American Legion Boys State and Girls State events from high school guidance counselors. Next year’s event will be held in June at Eastern Illinois University in Charleston.
